Today marks a day that Blakkfinn & Co. values and holds closely - World Oceans Day. The theme “Our Oceans, Our Future” is focused on encouraging solutions to plastic pollution and preventing marine litter for a healthier ocean and better future for all. World Oceans Day honours and aids in the protection and conservation of the world’s life support system - our oceans. They play such a vital role in human life and health, providing food, enjoyment, jobs and half the world’s oxygen to billions of people. Simply put, if they die, we die.
Unsustainable industrial fishing is endangering species and demolishing habitats across the globe. Climate change and ocean acidification is becoming a greater concern and boasting more extreme impacts on ocean health. Plastic pollution is both permanent and indestructible, making it such an important but steep issue to tackle.
This year’s focus on plastic pollution and marine litter is a significant one. More than 8 million tons of plastic is dumped in our oceans every year, over 90% of all seabirds have plastic in their stomach, and 1 in 3 species of marine mammals have been found entangled in marine litter. As a brand advocating for ocean conservation, this World Oceans Day we urge you to keep in mind the oceans imperative role on earth, begin making more conscious decisions and to support pro ocean behaviours.
If we don't change the way we do things – and quickly – we are on course to cause irreversible damage to our blue best friend. The collapse of some of the most important food sources and additional resources provided by our oceans would be devastating. Fortunately, we are in reach of a world where communities and individuals respect our oceans and the ones who depend on them.
